Psychologists use the term “to highlight” – it means that the therapist can show the client the shadow side of an issue.

You can (and should) use this approach yourself. Especially, if you often:

– think negatively

– wind yourself up

– catastrophize

Let’s learn this great self-support technique.

For example, you may think “Everything is bad!”.

At this moment, you should stop yourself and ask specific questions:

– What exactly is bad?

– What part of your life seems dark now?

– And what is going well? Is there a part of your life where everything is quiet or maybe even joyful?

It is important to highlight the positive and neutral sides to restore the balance. It is never the case that “everything is bad”.

This is a wonderful technique to apply to your appearance.

For example, you may think “I am not good-looking”.

Let us decompose this thought as follows:

– What exactly about my appearance is not beautiful?

– What is it exactly that I do not like about myself?

– And what do I like?

– What do I consider attractive in myself?

Again, it never happens that a person does not like absolutely everything about themselves.
