Think of them as fuel in a car: if the tank is empty, you are not going anywhere. The same is true for us. When we are running low on energy, our bodies shift into power-saving mode, and even the simplest tasks can suddenly feel overwhelming.

Running on empty means feeling so physically, mentally, or emotionally depleted that everyday demands become difficult to manage. Understanding what drains your energy—and what restores it—can help you begin to recharge.

Types of resources: internal and external

We have two main types of resources: internal resources and external resources.

Internal resources include our experiences, skills, beliefs, emotions, and coping strategies. In other words, they are the personal qualities and abilities over which we have at least some control.

External resources include relationships, money, time, emotional support, and community. Some of these resources, such as money or material possessions, can be gained through action. Time can also be managed more intentionally to make room for rest and recovery. Support from other people, however, is not something we can fully control.

Sometimes, an external resource can become an internal one. For example, new information can become knowledge, strengthening your inner foundation and giving you something you can draw on in the future.

Where’s your energy going?

Energy usually does not disappear for no reason. Something inside or outside of you is often creating an energy drain. Identifying that source is an important first step toward feeling restored.

Common causes of low mental, emotional, or physical energy include:

Ongoing conflict

Vitamin deficiencies, lack of sleep, or a poor diet

Overload at work or in your personal life

Unfinished projects

Constant worry

High levels of anxiety or obsessive thoughts

Plans that have not been realized or desires that remain unmet

Toxic people

Unrealistic expectations of yourself

Once you recognize what is depleting you, you can make more intentional choices about where your limited energy goes and how you replenish it.

Five effective ways to get your energy back

1. Take care of your body

Getting enough sleep, eating well, staying active, and spending time outdoors are basic but powerful ways to recharge. Start by prioritizing rest, choosing food that nourishes you, and adding more movement to your routine—whether that means going for a walk or working out at the gym.

Physical care supports your overall energy. When you are running on empty, returning to these basic needs can be an important place to begin.

2. Work on your emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage your feelings. Becoming more aware of your emotions—and learning to use them as fuel—can help you access energy that may otherwise feel unavailable.

Practice noticing what you feel, understanding why you feel it, and deciding how you want to respond. This emotional awareness can help you tap into a powerful source of motivation.

3. Make a resource map.

We all have different resources that give us energy. What energizes one person may not work for another. A resource map is a personal list of the people, places, and activities that help you feel restored.

Create three lists:

Resource People: people whose presence or support helps you feel better

Resource Places: places where you feel comfortable, energized, or restored

Resource Activities: things you do that help refill your emotional or mental tank

Keep your resource map somewhere visible and update it regularly. Most importantly, intentionally make time for the people, places, and activities that give you energy.

4. Make your inner child happy.

Sometimes, feeling drained is a sign that we have been ignoring our own needs and desires. When this continues, apathy can begin to creep in.

To reconnect with a sense of fun and excitement, make a list of at least 30 activities you would like to try. Then choose five to do over the next couple of weeks—and follow through on them. Making room for enjoyment is one way to reconnect with what energizes you.

5. Learn to budget your energy.

We often behave as though we start every day with a full tank, but energy levels naturally fluctuate. Some days, you may feel as though you are operating at 90%; on other days, you may have only 60% available.

You cannot spend 60% of your energy on work and then another 60% on your family. That would require you to operate at 120%, which simply does not work.

Instead, consider how much energy you actually have and prioritize what matters most that day. Some days, your family may need more of your attention. On other days, work may take center stage. Energy budgeting means matching your commitments to your current capacity rather than expecting the same output every day.

When you are out of energy, give yourself permission to rest

Bonus Tip: Sometimes, the best thing you can do is rest. Even high-performance cars need a pit stop, and human beings are far more complex. When you are out of energy, it is okay to pause and recharge. Treat yourself with the same care you would offer someone else.

Follow us on social media 👇

If even simple tasks feel overwhelming, your energy may be asking for attention—not more pressure.
