New Year’s celebration has a special significance for many people. Often, it is not just a transition from December 31st of one year to January 1st of the next one – it is some sort of milestone.
At the end of each year, we get into a mystical mood. Various rituals related to this period only support it. When something goes not according to our plan, our emotions of sadness, melancholy, disappointment become many times stronger and more painful as compared to other “usual” days.
One of the hardest experiences related to the New Year’s celebration is loneliness. How can you help yourself if you know that your New Year’s Eve will be “lonely” this time?
1. Remind yourself that despite the “charge” in the air, it is just a night. The fact that this is the night of transition from one year to the next doesn’t have any critical significance. It doesn’t make the situation very different, even though it may seem like it. It is just a night, like any other. And after this night, there will be another morning.
2. Remember that the most important person in your life is you. You can listen to yourself and create a festive mood for yourself. What do you need to do it?
Do you want celebration and beauty? Think about the menu. Have something unusual and beautiful: you can cook it yourself, or you can order it from a restaurant. Set the table festively and put on your best attire.
Do you want to feel warm and cozy and take a break from the hustle and bustle? Stay home wearing your favorite harem pants and a sweatshirt. Order a pizza – you can allow yourself anything, there is nobody whom you need to consult!
3. Think about what exactly scares you about being alone on New Year’s Eve and disassemble your fears. There may be different reasons:
a. “New Year’s is a family holiday”. My loneliness on this night says that something is “wrong” with me. But… one single lonely night doesn’t imply a lonely life. Are all “family” New Year celebrations good? Try to remember…
b. “I will start analyzing my failures and will fall into despair”. No looking back! Take a notepad and set goals for the next year. Start with listing 100 wishes for 2021. And think about how you can transform them into goals.
c. “Nobody needs me”. A thought like this can darken any day, not just December 31st. But this is just a momentary mood – do not succumb to it!
4. Remember that everyone, at least once in their lifetime, experiences New Year’s Eve or a Birthday in a way that they wouldn’t wish. Some people are in a hospital, others – at the airport or in the army. But luckily, this only happens once in a while. Accept this as a fact of life and tell yourself “Interesting how things work out!”.
Your mood on New Year’s Eve is your choice. You can choose melancholy, or you can choose peacefulness and excitement. What are you going to choose?
