Everyone, without exception, has a superpower. Recognizing yours can help you find your calling, realize your potential, and achieve success. Even so, answering the question, “What is my superpower?” may not be easy.
What Is a Personal Superpower?
A personal superpower is your unique combination of talents, qualities, desires, values, and skills. It is unique because no one else has this exact combination in quite the same way.
Why Is It Important to Recognize Your Superpower?
What can your superpower give you? In short, it can create opportunities. By recognizing and understanding your unique strengths, you can:
- identify your calling in life;
- find meaningful paths toward self-fulfillment;
- work toward what you want more easily and efficiently;
- grow and develop;
- feel more satisfied with what you do;
- achieve success;
- develop a stronger sense of belonging.
Knowing your superpower can help you understand where your interests, abilities, and values come together. This understanding can point you toward activities and goals that feel both meaningful and natural to you.
How to Discover Your Superpower in Three Steps
How do you discover your superpower? Start with these three steps, which focus on what you love, what you can do, and what matters most to you.
Step 1: Identify What You Truly Love
This may sound like a piece of cake—until you actually sit down and make a list. The first five to ten items may come easily, but the exercise will probably become more difficult as you continue, especially if you are not fully in touch with your true interests and desires.
Take your time and focus on the things you genuinely enjoy, rather than the things you think you should enjoy. Your answers will form the first part of your personal superpower.
Step 2: Identify Your Skills and Abilities
Consider both your obvious abilities and the strengths that may be hidden or overlooked. You can complete a questionnaire, analyze your personal experiences, or take an aptitude test to help you with this step. You can find all of these resources in our course, Compass.
The goal is to recognize what you do well, including abilities that may feel so natural to you that you rarely think of them as special.
Step 3: Identify Your Core Values and Motivations
What is truly important to you? What drives you forward? Your answers will reveal your needs, values, and sources of meaning—the inner reference points that guide your choices and direction.
Specific psychological exercises can help you identify these points of orientation more clearly. Understanding what motivates you is an essential part of seeing how your interests, abilities, and values fit together.
How to Put the Three Steps Together
Once you have completed all three steps, combine your answers into one list. Look for recurring themes and connections, and then summarize what you find in a couple of sentences.
Your superpower statement should bring together what you love, what you are good at, and what matters to you. It does not need to sound perfect. It simply needs to express the combination that feels most authentic to you.
An Example of a Personal Superpower
For example, Cortney thinks, “I like creating things with my own hands. I’m really good at it, and I enjoy seeing people appreciate my work.”
From this reflection, she realizes that her superpower is creating beautiful things for other people to enjoy. She recognizes herself as a craftswoman. Cortney can then consider professions that match her superpower and think about how she might begin using it to her advantage in different areas of her life.
What Is Your Superpower?
What result did you get? When you bring together your passions, abilities, values, and motivations, your unique pattern can become much easier to see.
See? We told you: you really do have a superpower.
