Early on, intimacy often flows naturally, and we may not think much about whether our needs are balanced because we’re caught up in the excitement. Hormones such as oxytocin can also make it easier to overlook minor disagreements or our partner’s quirks.

As time goes on, however, that initial spark may fade. It’s not uncommon to reach a point where one person wants sex more often than the other. One partner may want it every day, while the other is comfortable with once a week or even less. This difference is often described as mismatched sex drives or a difference in sexual desire.

Anastasia Borisova, a clinical psychologist and family therapist, shares her perspective on how couples can understand and navigate this situation.

Having different levels of sexual desire is normal!

First, it’s important to understand that there is no single “normal” amount of sex. Everyone has their own level of desire, and that’s completely okay. Some people identify as asexual, meaning they don’t experience sexual attraction, and may find fulfillment in other areas of life.

Low sexual desire was once more readily treated as a medical diagnosis, but having less interest in sex is not necessarily a disorder. In some cases, a person may understand their asexuality as a way of protecting themselves after trauma or difficult relationships, but it does not always need to be “fixed.”

However, if your partner’s level of sexual desire changes suddenly and dramatically, it may be a sign that something else is going on. In that case, the change may be worth exploring together.

How much sex is considered normal?

There is no magic number for how often a couple should have sex. Social pressure can make us feel that we “should” want sex a certain number of times per week or month, but your preferences and needs matter more than an outside standard.

One way people sometimes try to categorize sexual desire is through the idea of a “sexual constitution”:

People with a strong sexual constitution may want sex daily or more often.

People with a medium sexual constitution might want sex three or four times a week.

People with a weak sexual constitution may experience sexual desire once a month or even less often.

These labels are not rules. Sex is not a competition, and there is no universal standard that every relationship must meet. What matters is how you and your partner understand your own preferences, boundaries, and needs.

What to do when different sex drives cause tension?

If you’re in a relationship where one person wants sex five times a day and the other wants it once a year, it’s important to address the difference rather than ignore it. A therapist can help you work through the tension, but you can also begin by having an open, honest conversation about sex.

Talk together about:

What each of you considers a healthy or satisfying amount of sex.

What counts as sex for each of you. Does it have to involve penetration, or can it include oral sex or mutual touching?

What role sex plays in your relationship. Do you always feel that you need a partner, or can solo sex sometimes be fulfilling?

What sex means to each of you emotionally.

Ask yourself what “needing more sex” really means

Ask yourself: “How do I know I need more sex than my partner?” Sometimes the issue isn’t the amount of sex itself, but the feelings surrounding it.

For example, you may feel that you’re always the one initiating sex. That can create the impression that you want it more, even if that isn’t actually true. The deeper issue may be a desire to feel wanted or to see your partner take the initiative.

In other cases, one partner may see sex as a form of deep emotional connection, while the other is comfortable meeting some of their sexual needs through masturbation. Time can also be a factor: one person may prefer long, drawn-out encounters, while the other is satisfied with just a few minutes.

When we say, “I need more sex than my partner,” we are often expressing something deeper than a desire for the physical act itself. Take some time to consider what the statement really means for you. Sex is not only physical; it can also reflect the emotional relationship between you and your partner.

Examine your expectations about sex

To better understand why you feel this way, think about where your expectations around sex came from. Did you learn ideas about what is “normal” from society or from previous relationships? Are those expectations affecting how you view your current relationship?

It may also help to ask whether you can meet some of your needs without always relying on your partner. The answer will be different for everyone, which is why understanding the emotional meaning of sex is just as important as discussing frequency.

Is there one solution for mismatched sex drives?

No single solution works for every couple. Every relationship is different, and both partners’ needs and boundaries matter. The key is open communication, curiosity about each other’s experiences, and a shared effort to understand what works for both of you.

Follow us on social media 👇

Wanting more sex than your partner can feel deeply personal—but the real issue may not be frequency at all.

[2
486,808,1120,1170
post-1017457","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-eng","tag-emotions","tag-love","tag-psychology","tag-relationships
["GET
