It is common to think that people seek psychological help when everything is falling apart: there are problems in the family, at work, health issues, etc. But what if the situation is very different?

At first glance, everything seems to be OK: a person is leading a good life, working, making decent money, has a family… But there is no happiness in their life. They feel horrible: they do not want to get up in the morning and there is no joy. Everything seems dull and flat. What is going on? Friends and family tell them that they do not realize how good they have it. What else do they want?

Others, out of good heart, may even remind them that they should be ashamed of their unhappiness: they have it all! “And you know, there are children in Africa who are starving – and you? Yesterday, you had duck confit for dinner… What unhappiness you are talking about?”

Let’s figure this out: what can be “wrong” when everything is “right”?

1. Depression.

This illness may happen when everything is good on the surface. Depression can be not only exogenous (caused by external causes), but also endogenous: based on a violation of metabolic processes in the brain. That is, it may be caused by a violation of the formation of serotonin and norepinephrine or biogenic amines.

It is impossible to be happy in the presence of depression, and such depression cannot be cured without properly prescribed treatment.

2. Not everything is good as it seems.

Yes, at the first glance, everything is awesome: you have a family, a job, and good health. But what is inside of you?

You are not sure where to begin?

Zoe’s situation is quite good on the surface. She has a prestigious job and is married. She and her husband are planning to have children. However, Zoe does not feel happy. The thing is that Zoe got pressured into marriage by her mother. Her husband is a good person, but unfortunately, Zoe does not have feelings for him… And Zoe wants love…

Craig is a captain in the military. He has a wife and a newborn child. But Craig often feels sad. At the meeting with a psychologist, it turned out that Craig is from a military dynasty. There was no choice of profession for him – his father insisted on a military school. Craig could not say “no” even though everything about military service repulses him: the need to follow orders and strict discipline… Craig is completely different: creative, subtle, and emotional. He wanted to become a singer or an actor, but alas… Someone else made this choice for him

If “out of the blue” there is a feeling of unhappiness, you need to look for a “leak in the hull”, so to speak. There is likely an important unresolved need, as in the case of Zoe and Craig.

When the most important vital needs are not met, you will feel bad even when everything seems “good”.

3. Traumatic experience.

When everything is difficult and a person needs to overcome some obstacles every day, oddly enough, they can be functioning quite well. It is a well-known fact that during wars and revolutions, neurotic disorders in people disappear somewhere because there are other, more pressing tasks for the psyche. But when everything is more or less good, the past traumatic experience, if any, raises its head and becomes more active.

If everything is fine with you on the surface, but at the same time you feel unhappy, you should contact a specialist and look for the explanation a little deeper. There must be a reason for it, for sure! It is worth your effort, trust us.
