They can disrupt the connection between two people and turn what could have been an enjoyable conversation into a frustrating experience. Let’s look at some common communication obstacles and how to overcome them.

What Are Communication Barriers?

Communication barriers are anything that prevents people from clearly expressing, receiving, or understanding a message. They can arise from the way someone speaks, differences in language or communication style, emotional reactions, past experiences, stereotypes, or conflicting points of view.

Common communication barriers include:

Articulation issues

Slang and professional jargon

Different communication styles

Different priorities and levels of interest

Emotional and interpersonal obstacles

1. Articulation Issues

Misunderstandings can occur when someone speaks indistinctly or has difficulty pronouncing certain sounds or words. Even when the message itself is clear, the listener may struggle to follow what is being said.

To overcome this communication barrier, work on your articulation and consider consulting a speech therapist if necessary. It is also important to observe the reactions of the people you are speaking with. Can they follow what you are saying, or do they frequently seem confused? Paying attention to their responses can help you recognize when clarification is needed.

2. Using Slang or Professional Jargon

Misunderstandings can also arise when people come from different cultural or professional backgrounds. Words, expressions, and references that seem obvious to one person may be completely unfamiliar to another.

Slang and jargon become communication barriers when the listener does not understand them. Adjust your language to suit the situation, and check whether the other person can easily understand you.

If you are talking to a coworker and using professional jargon, there may be no problem because you share the same vocabulary. However, if you describe your work in exactly the same way to your partner, the conversation will probably become one-sided. Your partner may hear the words without understanding what you actually mean.

3. Differences in Communication Style

People communicate in different ways. Some are direct, while others express themselves less explicitly. These differences can create confusion and irritation, even when neither person intends to be unclear or disrespectful.

Our recommendation remains the same: check whether the other person understands you and whether you understand them. If not, ask for clarification before the misunderstanding escalates. Explain what you mean when necessary, and give the other person an opportunity to do the same.

4. Different Priorities and Levels of Interest

Something that feels extremely important to one person may not matter nearly as much to someone else. When people assign different levels of importance to a topic, they may struggle to remain engaged in the same conversation.

Always remember the purpose of the particular conversation you are having, and use your emotional intelligence. Try to recognize what matters to the other person instead of assuming that they will automatically share your priorities or perspective.

5. Interpersonal and Emotional Barriers in Interactions

Our feelings, expectations, and previous experiences all influence the way we interact with other people. As a result, interpersonal barriers can make open communication difficult even when the words themselves are clear.

Negative Feelings and Past Experiences

Fear, mistrust, anger, and disgust can all interfere with communication. What makes this especially frustrating is that these feelings may not originate in the present moment. Instead, they may be projections of previous experiences.

Take Mark, for example. One of his former girlfriends removed everything valuable from his apartment while he was away. Since then, Mark has stopped trusting women, so it is not surprising that he has difficulty getting along with them.

If you want to give future relationships a genuine chance, you first need to address the traumatic experiences that continue to shape your expectations. Otherwise, past pain may become a barrier in each new relationship.

Stereotypes and Labels

Stereotypes and labels are communication barriers because they encourage us to respond to assumptions rather than to the person in front of us. It is difficult to have an effective conversation when someone expects you to play a role that does not reflect who you are.

Nonetheless, people often attach labels to others—“Josh is stupid,” “Kate is shallow,” “Pete is unreliable,” or “Cindy is boring”—and then shape their conversations around those labels.

Try to set aside opinions you may have heard about the person you are speaking with and build your communication around the present moment. You can also practice turning labels into facts. There is a significant difference between “Pete is unreliable” and “Pete was late for our last meeting.”

In the first statement, “unreliable” is a label applied to Pete’s character. In the second, his lateness is described as a specific fact. Facts leave room for conversation; labels tend to shut it down.

Judgment and Conflicting Points of View

People can perceive the same thing they see, hear, or experience in very different ways. If you consider only your own point of view and do not allow others to have a different opinion, communication is likely to fail.

When you begin sorting every perspective into categories such as “right” and “wrong,” you lose touch with the other person. Judgment does not help you understand someone else’s experience. Instead, avoid rushing to judgment and practice active listening.

Intense Emotions and Impulsive Reactions

Intense emotions can also hinder communication. Imagine that you are in a bad mood and need to discuss a work task with a coworker. They make an ordinary comment, but you suddenly snap at them. Your coworker is taken aback, and the conversation quickly breaks down because you were unable to manage your emotional reaction.

That is why it is important to remain aware of your emotional state and create a pause between the input—what you hear—and the output—what you say. Pausing before you respond can prevent a strong emotion from controlling the conversation. If counting to ten works for you, use it to give yourself that moment.

Ultimately, overcoming communication barriers requires attention to both people involved. Speak clearly, adapt your language, ask questions, notice your emotional state, and listen without immediately judging. These habits can help prevent misunderstandings and make communication feel more open, respectful, and productive.

Follow us on social media 👇

When conversations keep going wrong, the real problem may not be what you mean—but what gets in the way.

[2
486,550,1120,1170
post-1015851","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-eng","tag-emotions","tag-fear","tag-psychology","tag-relationships
["GET
