What To Tell Yourself When Someone Walks Out On You

We’ve all been there. No matter how old you are, be it 14, 18, 25, or 60, it’s always painful. It’s important to support yourself the way you would support a dear friend during such bitter times. Unfortunately, no words can relieve your heart from grief. However, there are words that will prevent you from drowning in an ocean of tears and remind you that all of this will pass.

To achieve the best results, try to address yourself as if from the outside, as if to someone else who is close to you. You are your dearest, closest, and most precious person.

1. It is indeed very hard.

There are plenty of people who will immediately advise you to ‘forget’, ‘move on’, and ‘find someone better’. However, when something like this happens, hearing words of the kind might be hurtful, it might seem that no one understands what you are actually feeling. This is why your first step should be admitting that you cannot just forget the person who left you as if they have never existed.

2. I am very sorry…

This is what we say when we join other people in sadness. Yes, we are sorry it happened. It’s hard to move on without first shedding tears because of your loss. A breakup is a loss, you are losing the plans you had together, your hopes and dreams about the future.

3. I can feel sad because of it.

Give yourself some time to cry. Don’t try to look fine and happy, it’s not so. Let yourself walk around the house in pajamas, feel sad, cry, pour your grief out, do not seal it inside of yourself. In a couple of days, when this period passes, you will be able to start collecting the pieces of yourself. However, it will come a little later.

4. I am good!

When someone walks out on you, it affects your self-esteem. It’s painful and precise. You unwillingly start to torture yourself in doubts, “Was I good enough? Do I deserve love? Would anyone need me?” Don’t do this! Despite the fact that that other person ceased contact with you, it only means that they made a decision for themselves. Do not assume all the responsibility for it.

5. I can handle it!

It’s true, my dear human. You will handle it. Even if it seems like your soul has been turned inside-out. Even if it seems that all the good things are over. Even if you listen to sad songs and understand what they mean when they sing things like, “what good do I have to expect from life now, if you were the best thing about it?” You will handle it, even if it seems unbearable right now.

6. I will be happy again.

This is the hardest thing to believe. However, the truth is, it’s just one chapter of your life that’s over now. There will be another one, for sure! Time will pass, and you will be able to let another person into your heart and love them.

7. Time heals all wounds.

The art of making small steps helps to live through the hardest times. It’s not the time for big goals. Your current task is to let go, slowly. Even if people criticize this statement, time does heal all wounds by making you more and more distant from something that used to be so important for you. Allow it to do so.
