We have compiled (and debunked) some popular misbeliefs about child-parent relationships.

Misbelief #1:

To respect parents means to agree with everything they say.

Reality:

You do not share the same point of view with people in order to respect them and accept them. Besides, there are some tactful and gracious ways to express one’s disagreement. On the other hand, to force your opinion on someone is a true sign of disrespect.

Misbelief #2:

You should accept your parents the way they are

Reality:

You should not ignore abuse even coming from those very close to you. Should someone cause you any harm (be that – emotional, physical, and material) it is your prerogative to do everything in your power to defend yourself.

Misbelief #3:

There should not be any secrets in the family

Reality:

There are boundaries even between the closest relatives. There is a confusion circulating around that when it comes to boundaries – relatives are an exception and are allowed to enter where others should remain outside. That is not true. Mental, emotional, and physical boundaries are in effect with the closest of relatives.

Misbelief #4:

Children must support their parents.

Reality:

It is up to a person to choose what he or she wants and could (in that order) give to parents. That decision hinges on personal wishes, resources, and accounts. As well as the history of family relationships. How the relationships within the family are, and do they prompt any support.

Misbelief #5:

Parents know better – what is good for you.

Reality:

The only one who really knows better – is you.
